The United States of Armageddon

This is the sort of persecution that Christians have been predicting for more than a hundred years as a function of the “Great Tribulation” under the rule of an oppressive one-world government, which will precede the final judgment of mankind (whether it happens before or after the Rapture depends on whether one is a pre- or post-millennial believer). Usually, the beheading includes a guillotine (c.f., Tim LaHaye’s “Left Behind” series).

It is not, however, what most contemporary fundamentalist or evangelical Chrisitans mean when they cry “persecution!” in the United States. Instead, what is generally called “persecution” here is simply being told that their religion will not be privileged over any others, that everyone has the right to live as they wish, and that the government is not to favor any religion or use it as a source for laws.

Short form: Decapitation = persecution. Not agreeing with you = definitely not persecution.
