Armageddon army

Via the OC Weekly comes this tidbit about an End Times preacher and profit—er, prophet—who is busily recruiting Marines at Camp Pendleton to his brand of militaristic, Armageddonist Christianity:

“We are disturbed that the government is giving such extensive support, including assets, resources and personnel, to a single sect of Christianity,” the groups wrote. “Even more troubling is the ‘doomsday’ nature of [Calvary Chapel]. … The last thing Camp Pendleton needs is a large group of well-armed Marines convinced of an imminent doomsday crisis.”

Yeah, that is a bit disturbing.

Rev. 19:11, nuclear war, and the U.S. Air Force

One of these things is not like the others, if you’ll recall your Sesame Street song.

That is, yes, the US Air Force is responsible for conducting nuclear war (dawg forbid we should ever need to do such a thing), but what’s Revelation 19:11 got to do with it?

That’s the one that reads:

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.

It was part of a special course—called “Jesus Loves Nukes” by some of the attendees—was to help create a Christian theory of “just war.” It’s no longer being held, but Robert Koehler at HuffPo has an essay called “The Theology of Armageddon” about it.
